They arrived in Montreal by boat and travelled west to Taber where they settled and started working in the beet fields. After finishing grade eight, John spent several years farming with his dad. He married Irene Sevinski in Taber on February 20, 1950. They lived with his parents, Babi & Zedo for a short while before John built their first home. Eventually he decided that farming wasn’t for him and made a new start when his brother-in-law Peter Leskiw Sr. offered him a job with Lucerne in the early sixty’s. During these years, he enjoyed playing darts and especially loved to fish, spending many May long weekends with his sons and his brother Rudy and his boys on their fishing “derbys”. After many successful years as a field man, John retired in 1990. He loved carpentry and in addition to building their first home and spent countless hours renovating the other homes they lived in. He had a new found passion for cooking. John spent many afternoons walking through Confederation Park where he would spend time reading. He loved watching movies. He enjoyed visits with his family and friends and cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
