GABE MEZEI

1919 - 2011

Gabriel Mezei, beloved husband of Marta Mezei of Vauxhall, passed away in Taber on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the age of 91 years.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Ken Easterbrook officiating. Burial to follow at the Vauxhall Cemetery.
Besides his loving wife Marta, he is survived by his children Barbara (Mervin) Mardian of Dunmore, Crystal (Glenn) Moore of Calgary and Danny “Denny” (Liz) Mezei of Scandia; grandchildren Bobbie-Jo (Jason) Waite, Candice (Allan) Hubbard, Travis Moore, Devon Mezei, Delwyn Mezei and Brett Kerner; great grandchildren Cadence & Ty Hubbard and Corbin Waite. He is also survived by his sister Julia (Joe) Eder of High River and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Alex & Julia Mezei, daughter Adeline Mezei, granddaughter Dee-Ann Mezei, sister Helen Varga, brother Tibor Mezei and brother-in-law Eugene Varga.
Gabe was born July 7, 1919 in Hungary to Alex and Julia Mezei. He immigrated to Canada on March 21, 1933 and settled in Retlaw. Gabe met Marta Link in May of 1951 and they were married June that same year. He farmed for many years. They resided in Medicine Hat from 1965 to 1978 where he was employed by the City of Medicine Hat while farming at Seven Persons. In 1978 they moved to Vauxhall where Gabe and Marta owned and operated the car wash until the mid eighties. Gabe enjoyed working in the yard and fishing. In 2001 Gabe traveled to Hungary. He was a member of the Retlaw Historical Society and assisted with the restoration of the Retlaw Church.
