PHIL GLAS
1922 - 2010
Philip Quinton Glas of Vauxhall, beloved husband of the late Thelma Glas, passed away in Taber on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at the age of 88 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
A private family burial service will be held at the Hays Cemetery prior to the funeral service on Thursday, December 23, 2010.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 217 - 5 Street North, Vauxhall on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with Pete Janzen officiating.
Phil is survived by eight children - Donna (Adolf) Riemann of Coaldale, Lenora Yaroslawsky of Hays, Connie (Ron) Wangsness of Stoughton, Saskatchewan, Claire (Elmer Goller) Glas of Rolling Hills, Phyllis Hirney of Hays, Sharon (Gord) Hirney of Hays, Rod (Colleen) Glas of Vauxhall and Wanda (Dean Bishoff) Glas of Medicine Hat. He will be fondly remembered by his very special companion Bertha Geremia of Retlaw. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and their spouses, thirty four great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Thelma Mae Glas, daughter Janette Ponting, his parents, eleven siblings, two infant grandsons and three sons-in-law.
Phil was born to Martin & Eva Marie Glas on March 23, 1922 on the family farm at Vibank, Saskatchewan. At the age of nineteen, Phil was called to serve with the armed forces at Regina and was later transferred and stationed in Vancouver. He also served in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska as a gunner and army truck driver. While in Vancouver, Phil met Thelma Mae Dredge and they were married in the fall of 1944. In the summer of 1945, they moved to Masefield, Saskatchewan where he began farming on his dad’s farm. In 1952, they moved to Hays where they raised their nine children.
Phil enjoyed playing many musical instruments and was an accomplished mechanic, carpenter, farmer and ball coach for the family team. He was a gentle soul with a big heart.
