Gladys was born in Edmonton on January 1, 1926 to John and Grace Handby. She was raised on a farm at Fleet, Alberta. Gladys worked as a telephone operator in Coronation where she met her future husband Ronald Cole. They were married on February 15, 1947 in Camrose. Ron worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and over the years they have resided in twenty three different places. Gladys worked as a bookkeeper in Grassy Lake. Following a move to Burdett she worked for a drugstore in Bow Island. They eventually moved to Taber where Gladys worked the majority of her working years at the Co-op, now the Taber Home and Farm Centre. She retired from there at the age of eighty one. In December of 2009 she was diagnosed with cancer. As a result Gladys and Ron moved into the Clearview Lodge in February of 2010. The joys in her life included her two puppies, crocheting, gardening and painting her house. Gladys was blessed with two new great grandchildren, Chloe born January 23, 2010 and Maddox born June 5, 2010. Moms favorite color was blue as many could see in her house where she painted her bathroom, including the door, all blue. She was famous for her cabbage rolls, banana bread and apple pie. Nobody could make a pie crust as thin as hers. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Gladys’ name may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317 - 10 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2M7.
