Paul Plettl

1930 - 2024

Paul Plettl, beloved husband of Dixie Plettl, passed away peacefully in his home in Vauxhall on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at the age of 94 years.

The Funeral Service was held at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Paul will be deeply missed by Dixie, his loving wife of sixty years and their four children, Corey Plettl (Mary Broderson) of Vauxhall, Lauralee (Evan) Klippenstein of Edmonton, Terry Plettl (Crystal Stout) of Red Deer and Jodie Plettl (Carmon Lastowsky) of Vauxhall; grandchildren Mike (Carlee), Tyren, Ryley (Serenity) and Brooke Plettl, Kadence and Reese Klippenstein, Taylor and Korbin Broderson, Isaac, Alex and Samantha Stout and by his great grandchildren Madison and Spencer, Kira and Arie and Easton. Paul was very fortunate that throughout the years his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren spent lots of time in Vauxhall at many family gatherings. He soaked in daily snuggles from the newest great grandson Easton Paul who was born two weeks prior to Paul’s passing. Paul also leaves behind two younger brothers John Plettl and Fred (Gail) Plettl, many brothers and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews, some of which he still stayed in close contact with.

He was predeceased by his father Ferdinand Plettl (1901-1994), mother Rosaliea “Rosa” Retzler (1906-1970), son Michael A. Plettl (1966-1967), sisters Rosa Thoms (1937-2003), Elisabeth “Lisa” Weippert (1933-2009) and Francis Kangiesser, brothers Stefan “Steve” Plettl (1935-2022) and Josef-Johann ”Joe” Plettl (1948-1983), in-laws Margaret Malm (1945-2010), Larry Craft (1931-2021), Jim Barca, Larry Barca (1958-1984), Rita Henline (1919-1995), Edward Henline (1910-1996) and Mike Barca (1891-1973).

Paul was born the third oldest of ten children in Gross Kikinda, Yugoslavia. He lived in Germany with his family before immigrating to Coaldale in 1953. His family of ten later moved to Taber where he met his future wife, Dixie Barca and they were married on November 23, 1963. They loved children and enjoyed being part of their many nieces and nephews lives around Southern Alberta and British Columbia. Soon they started a family of their own and moved to Vauxhall where they raised four children. Paul and Dixie have been proud to call Vauxhall home ever since.

Paul was known for his love of children, local hockey and being part of the community. He volunteered on the Vauxhall Ag Society for many years and enjoyed traveling to conferences and sharing stories with others like him who have a love for keeping their small communities alive. Paul loved being part of his children’s lives as well, watching all their activities while they were young, so much so you could see him at the hockey arena every weekend until he started working there as a retirement job. It felt like he lived there seven days a week. Paul was a family man until the end, he enjoyed having family functions on a regular basis and was very proud of the family he built.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Paul’s name may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 100, 119 - 14 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta T2N 1Z6 www.heartandstroke.com or to Diabetes Canada, Calgary and District Branch, 220, 6223 - 2 Street SE, Calgary, Alberta T2H 1J5 www.diabetes.ca.

The love and support of family and friends is what made him live so long. Also, a big thank you goes out to Dr. Aaron Low, internal specialist and fellow nurses at the Heart Function Clinic in Lethbridge for taking excellent care of Paul over the past ten years and to the Taber Hospital Doctors and Nurses for providing such good care for Paul over the past few years.
