Andy MacDonald

1932 - 2024

Andy MacDonald, long-time resident of the Craven, Saskatchewan area and more recently of Southern Alberta, passed peacefully in Taber on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at the age of 92 years.

Relatives and friends were invited to attend the committal service that was held at the Taber Memorial Garden, 7600 - 50 Street, Taber on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at 11:00 A.M., followed by a gathering in the lower lounge at the Royal Canadian Legion, 5205 - 48 Avenue, Taber.

Andrew MacDonald was born on May 9, 1932 in Trinity Gask, Perthshire, Scotland, the youngest of eight children. His mother died when he was six, after which he went to live with his eldest sister and her family. Andy started working on farms at a young age, and it was there that he met Maggie Foster, who would later become his wife and partner for the next seven decades.

At age eighteen, Andy enlisted in REME where he served five years, including four in Germany. Andy and Madge married and started their family, immigrating to Canada in 1957.

The growing family lived in Somerset and Swan Lake, Manitoba, then moved west to Saskatchewan and farmed in Bounty, Duck Lake and, ultimately, Craven. There, Andy managed Whitmore Farms Ltd. for the next thirty years until his retirement.

Andy was a true cattleman, and his years of participation in the Canadian Western Agribition resulted in many long-time friendships and a large box full of awards for the Registered Aberdeen Angus that he raised. With his high intelligence and determination, backed with mechanical knowledge earned in the army, it seemed that there wasn’t anything that he couldn’t build, fix, or grow.

Living to that age means surviving many family and friends, but there was no loss greater to Andy than the passing of his beloved wife, Madge, in 2020, and the tragic loss of their granddaughter Shanna.

Many cherished memories of Andy, and his love of sharing knowledge and stories, will be held in the hearts of his five children: Robert (Sharon) of Stirling, Harry (Georg) of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Ian (Evey) of Taber, Andy (Deb †) of Doha, Qatar, and Heather (Brian) of Diamond Valley, as well as his ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
