In loving memory of Derek Kenji Powell who passed away in Calgary on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at the age of 53 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, February 9, 2024 between 6:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Private burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Derek leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, survived by his mother "Amy" Emiko Powell. Derek's absence will be deeply felt by his sister Norma Powell (Helmut Neuper); cousins Tammy Endo (Les Harkness) and Ken Endo; uncles Roy and George Endo; aunts Ruth Endo and Ayako (Walter) Endo; nieces Sonya Harkness, Annika and Zoe Neuper.
He was predeceased by his father W. Hugh Powell, grandparents Eiji (Frank) and Kesami Endo and uncle Walter Endo.
Derek was born on January 12, 1971, in St. Catharines, Ontario, but a devoted long time resident of Taber and Lethbridge. Derek's educational journey led him through L.T. Westlake Elementary, Taber Junior High, WR Myers High School and the University of Lethbridge, shaping his character and forming lifelong connections.
A passionate soul, Derek's heart belonged to hockey, his cherished family and loyal friends. His love for the game echoed through the ice rinks, creating lasting memories for all who shared in his passion. Derek's warmth extended beyond the ice, embracing the bonds of family and friendship.
May Derek Powell rest in peace, his vibrant memory forever etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know and love him.

The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the Tsuji family, Derek's hockey family and the many others who have offered so much support. As well, their eternal gratitude to the RCMP officers who answered the call, the STARS critical care team who kept Derek safe in transit and the nurses, doctors, therapists and healthcare coordinators at Foothills ICU.
