After graduation he attended Lethbridge College before returning to Hays to farm full time with his dad and brother. He bought his own farm in the spring of 1984 and started farming on his own in 1998 when his dad retired. He met his wife Linda in Hays and they were married in 1986. Together they raised their two children and worked hard to build the farm. Richard always enjoyed travelling and holidays with his family, spending time outdoors, going for walks and doing yard work, farming as well as spending lots of time researching on the computer.
