Mavis Weatherhead
1936 - 2019
Mavis Jean Weatherhead, of Burdett, passed away peacefully at her much loved cabin at 40 Mile Park on Thursday, December 26, 2019. She was surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren who lifted her into heaven with their love.
Mavis was born to Agnes and Clarence Gooding in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 18, 1936. When she lost her parents at the age of nine, she lived with her aunt and uncle, Mark and Molly Gooding. Mavis was educated in Regina and trained as a nurse there at the Grey Nuns Hospital. When she graduated, she moved to Bow Island with her twin sister Maureen and her best friend Dixie Johnson, where they were hired to be among the first nurses at the new hospital. Mavis married her beloved Larry Weatherhead on September 23, 1960 and moved to Burdett where they raised their four daughters. She loved to laugh, read, can, camp and care for her family. Mavis supported Larry with the family farm and John Deere dealership. She particularly loved spending time with the Green Power staff and Burdett neighbours, many of whom were like extended family to her. In addition to being the best parents, Mavis and Larry shared many adventures travelling around the world together with family and friends. She especially loved her vacations with her kids and families, where she loved to spoil and spend time with her grandchildren. Mavis was an exceptional cook and she loved nothing more than to open her door to everyone to enjoy a meal and a visit. The highlight of her summer was camping in her motorhome, sunset rides in the pontoon boat with Larry, gator rides with her kids and warm evenings on the deck of the cabin at 40 Mile with family and her “dam” neighbors.
Mavis will be deeply missed by her devoted husband of fifty nine years, Larry and their girls Shannon (Kelly) McCoy of Coaldale, Michele (Ron Smith) of Maple Ridge, BC, Tami (Burke) Torscher of Taber and Jodi (Mark) Albrecht of Medicine Hat. She was a cherished grandmother to Bret, Spencer (Jordan), Connor, Meghan, Meranda, Jade, Krystin, Teah, Blake, Logan and Carson. Mavis is also survived by her sister Shirley Beauchamp of Winnipeg; Weatherhead brothers and sisters-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, aunt and uncle, Mavis was predeceased by her brother Brian, sister Maureen, nephews David, Garth and Michael; mother and father-in-law May and Clarence Weatherhead; three brothers-in-law Dale Weatherhead, Ross Poole and Adrien Stensrud.
Mavis will be privately remembered by her family and friends.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Mavis’ name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.
On behalf of Mavis, we would like to thank her many caregivers, including Dr. Woodruff and Bow Island Home Care, Sandra and Tammy over the past few years as her health declined. While she bravely battled pain and illness, your kindness, professionalism and good humour helped make Mavis’ days comfortable and provided the needed support for her family to keep her at home.
