Al was born in the Taber hospital on April 11 1951. He completed high school in Vauxhall. Al started into sports playing baseball, curling and his powerful performance on the high school basketball team. Following high school, he went to work in the family business, McNiven Excavating Ltd., retiring in 2013.
Al was a golfer for most of his life and for twenty five years played a strong game. When he wasn’t golfing, he was often found volunteering to improve the course. For the last six years, golfing gave way to camping and fishing. His final days were spent getting his fishing gear ready for his next trip to the pass.
