In 1949 he married Irene Daigle. Together they raised their family and shared forty-seven years of marriage. He was a farmer long past his retirement, keeping everyone up to date on the weather and crop conditions. Harold enjoyed long drives in the country with his family and loved to socialize, keeping a well-worn notebook of names in his pocket once his memory started to fail.
