Homer Oudman

1927 - 2017

Homer Oudman, beloved husband of Betty Oudman, left for his heavenly home on Sunday, April 30, 2017, surrounded by his family, at the age of 90 years.

Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Sunday, May 7, 2017 between 4:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M.

The Funeral Service was held at the First Christian Reformed Church, 3902 Heritage Drive, Taber on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Besides his loving wife Betty, Homer is survived by their children Hetty (Ken) Ames of Brooks, Jack (Marion) Oudman of Edmonton, Patrice (Philippe) Maldiney of Calgary, Andy (Willetta) Oudman of Lethbridge, Wilbur (Sarah) Oudman of Burns Harbor, Indiana, Greg Oudman of Vancouver, British Columbia, Janice (Hart) Lemmle of Edmonton, Rob (Leslee) Oudman of Taber, BJ Oudman (Karen) of Calgary and Marsha Oudman of Lethbridge; seventeen grandchildren and twenty seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Tina (Tim) Bouwsema, in-laws Leny Oudman, Dirk (Marilyn) Alting, Albert Donkerbroek and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Homer was born February 27, 1927 to Jacob and Pieterje Oudman in Stitswerd, Groningen, The Netherlands. After serving in the Dutch Army in Indonesia, he immigrated to Taber in 1950. In 1953, he married Betty Aasman and they were married for almost sixty four years.

Homer was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church, a great promoter of Christian education at all levels and of the Taber Special Needs Society. He farmed in Taber for forty years. His mixed farming experiences included sugar beet production, a foray into potatoes and many years raising cattle. Among his generous giving, supporting agriculture, whether it be Canadian Food Grains Bank or La Semilla Ministries, were some of his favourites. Homer had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel and experience new things. He was an outdoor man who never tired of Taber's endless blue skies or the brilliant color of new flowers. Homer had a heart for loving and serving the seniors in his community and always prioritized time with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
