Guinivere, the daughter of William and Irene (nee Smellie) Redd, was born and raised in Raymond. She attended Normal school in Calgary and taught in various Southern Alberta schools before obtaining her Bachelor degree in Education (majoring in Mathematics and Chemistry) from the University of Alberta in 1944. She was married in 1946 to Marvin Hull Torrie of Grassy Lake. They raised their family on the ranch in Grassy Lake, instilling in them a love of the Lord and of the land, the value of work, of doing their best, and an appreciation for their pioneer heritage.
Guinivere grew enormous gardens, baked wonderful bread, made delicious puddings, cinnamon buns and chiliburgers. She was active in her community, being involved in the Women’s Institute, the Grassy Lake Cemetery Society, and Grassy Lake Seniors. She was also the Village Secretary and school PTA president. She will be remembered for her many humorous readings and for her frequent and encouraging phone calls to friends and loved ones. She taught her family to love and appreciate poetry and great literature and music. She had an amazing memory, memorizing poetry and hundreds of scriptures.
She had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in many church callings, including three full-time missions with her husband, Marvin. Her family was her greatest joy. Some of her most favorite times were Sunday evenings when her posterity gathered for fudge, popcorn and family storytelling.
