GR was born on February 4, 1923 in Del Bonita to Freeman and Mary Clifton, the fifth and final addition to their family. Following in the footsteps of his three brothers Dad joined the army in June of 1941. After basic training, he was sent overseas spending seventeen months in Sicily, seventeen months in England and nine months in Western Europe (Holland) before being sent back home and discharged in October 1945. Dad received a number of medals during his service but the one he was most proud of was the Holland Appreciation Medal received when he returned to Holland to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Holland. In 1946 Dad met and married May Richardson. In 1953, after a few years of moving around, they settled in Hays where the government was offering homesteads to veterans and spent the next sixty plus years there raising their family. In August of this year Dad and Mom moved to Taber where he resided until his passing.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in GR’s name may be made directly to the Hays Cemetery Fund, Box 116, Hays, Alberta T0K 1B0.
