Dorothy grew up on the family ranch north of Bow Island. She loved the outdoors and as a child and young adult spent many hours outside helping her grandpa and then her dad. She rode her horse from the NA ranch to the one room schoolhouse she attended, although during the winter months the family moved into Bow Island and she attended the old brick schoolhouse there. Dorothy and Bob met at the John Neil ranch south of Burdett and they were married on September 21, 1940. In 1950 they moved to the Cowe’s ranch north of Bow Island where they raised their four children along with sheep, cows, chickens, pigs. They moved to the farm closer to Bow Island in 1958. During that time Dorothy, while being the typical farm wife, raised her children, had a huge yard and garden, drove a school bus for seventeen years, was very involved with the Social Credit Party along with many other ventures. Bob and Dorothy sold the farm to their son, Bill, and moved into Bow Island where they janitored the elementary school for eleven years. Her beautiful yard in Bow Island was admired by many. After “retiring” Dorothy decided, at the age of ninety, to become a Lethbridge Herald paper carrier, becoming the Herald’s “Senior” carrier and being interviewed by Global Television. The family moved Bob and Dorothy into the Pleasant View Lodge in October 2010 and in April 2012, Dorothy was moved to the Extended Care wing of the hospital where she lived until her passing.
Dorothy accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior at the age of sixteen. She never wavered in her decision to follow Christ, remaining faithful in her bible reading, prayer time, church attendance and tithing throughout the years. Truly she was a Proverbs 31 woman. We, her family, will miss her tremendously but rejoice in knowing we will meet again and she is finally home.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Dorothy’s name may be made directly to Cherry Coulee Christian Academy, Box 10370, Bow Island, Alberta T0K 0G0.
