LLOYD HIGGINS
1922 - 2013
The last of Retlaw’s pioneer Higgins family is gone with the passing of Lloyd Higgins, beloved husband of Doris Higgins, who passed away in Taber on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the age of 90 years.
A private burial service was held at the Taber Memorial Garden with Diaconal Minister, Judith McCulloch officiating.
Besides his loving wife Doris, he is survived by three nieces Jean, Pat and Sheila.
He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Mildred Higgins; twin brother Terry (Shirley) Higgins; brother Louis (Martha) Higgins; sister Florette Montgomery and nephew Brian Higgins.
The Retlaw twins Lloyd and Terry Higgins were born on the family farm in Retlaw. After a short period working on the coast of British Columbia, Lloyd returned to the land he loved and farmed and ranched with Terry for more than seventy years.
He had faith in John Deere power, the Liberal platform, Ford trucks, Hereford cattle and the Alberta Wheat Pool. Always sports minded, Lloyd curled for years, cheered for the New York Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Canadiens.
Lloyd enjoyed travelling. He has visited every Canadian province, England and Europe. He and Doris spent many March months in Hawaii and Florida.
Lloyd was a Mason for sixty four years and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Vauxhall branch.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Lloyd’s name may be made directly to the Retlaw Historical Society, Box 25, Vauxhall, Alberta T0K 2K0.
