HELEN MALINSKY

1925 - 2001

Helen Malinsky passed away in Taber on Monday, September 10, 2001 at the age of 76 years.
Helen was born in Taber on January 8, 1925 the daughter of Dan and Annie Malinsky.
She attended school in Taber from Grades one to nine, after which she moved to Calgary to continue her education. In Calgary she attended St. Mary’s Girls Catholic High School in grade ten and eleven. At that time, World War II, she was an active member of the Canadian Red Cross. She returned to Taber to complete her grade twelve and subsequently secured employment in the local Drug Store, (Wilson and Bobby Wright). She was later hired by the local branch of the Bank Of Montreal and worked in Taber until 1957 when she was transferred to a Calgary branch. After one year she was offered a position with IBM in Calgary where she remained in their employ for three years. During this time she became a member of the Canadian Army (Militia) as a member of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps (CWAC) which occupied much of her leisure time. Through her training and qualifications she was granted a Commission as an Officer in the rank of Lieutenant. Later she accepted a position in the Regular Army. She served a posting at Headquarters Western Command in Edmonton and then returned to her favorite city, Calgary, and to civilian employment.
In Calgary she was readily employed in the expanding oil industry by High Tower Drilling, a subsidiary of the Seaman Brothers Holdings. When Dome Petroleum became one of Calgary’s largest employers she became an employee. She remained in their employ until 1975 at which time it was her wish to return to the “real” Southern Alberta and she relocated to Lethbridge.
She remained in Lethbridge until 1986 then returned to the place of her birth, Taber.
During her youth she was an active participant in sports. Helen later participated in tennis and curling. She also had a keen interest in ballet and classical music. Helen had a special affection for the infirm, underprivileged, the elderly and her little nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed maintaining her own home and yard.
In Taber she attended St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and was involved in volunteer work.
She will be forever missed by her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; a brother Edward of Taber; two sisters-in-law Mary Malinsky and Elaine Malinsky of Taber.
She was predeceased by her parents; five older brothers John, Nick, Bill, Alex and George; two older sisters Mary Crow RN and Dolly Douglas; two sisters-in-law May and Gladys (Bunty).
Relatives and friends were invited to pay their respects at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, September 13, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Jim de los Angeles celebrant. Burial followed in the Taber Memorial Garden.
