ALICE AVERY

1914 - 2001

Alice S. Avery of Taber, beloved wife of the late Arthur Avery, passed away quietly at the Taber Hospital on Monday, August 27, 2001 following a short illness.
Born in Hartshorn, Alberta, and growing up in Byemoor, she graduated from Camrose Normal School and promptly began a teaching career in Success and Summerhills Schools in South Central Alberta. Her teaching eventually brought her to Taber where she taught in the elementary school on the south side of town.
She married Arthur H. Avery in 1944, and enjoyed a happy marriage until his passing in 1998. Alice was a longtime resident of Taber and will be remembered as a loyal friend and an outstanding servant of the town in which she lived. At the time of her passing she was a member in good standing of the Order of the Eastern Star and Maple Leaf Chapter Number 7. She had served as secretary and Worthy Matron in the Rosalin Chapter in Taber, prior to its closing. She was also a member of I.O.D.E. Her interest in the children of Taber was shown in her services as Guardian of Job’s Daughters, her teaching in the early 1940’s, her service to the library as Secretary Treasurer for many years and as librarian from 1974 to 1993, and her coordination and teaching of Sunday School at St. Theodore’s Anglican Church. She also served on the Altar Guild and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary in the church.
For many years Alice was a cornerstone in canvassing for cancer and heart research.
She took great pleasure in her children, and later, her grandchildren. Sadly, Alice was predeceased by both her sons, Charles and Ronald, as well as her husband Arthur. She is survived by her daughter Betty (Ted) Pike; 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Teacher, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and community servant, Alice will be remembered with fond affection by many.
The Funeral Service was held at St. Theodore’s Anglican Church, 5120 - 44th Avenue, Taber on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Dale Lang officiating the celebration of Alice’s life. Burial followed in the Taber Memorial Garden. A special thank you is sent to Home Care Nurses, Connie Yamabe and Anne Veenstra whose care and support was appreciated by Alice and the family. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Wes Steed at the hospital for his care and compassion.
