1924 - 2012
Ivan “John” Nowak, beloved husband of Katie Nowak of Taber, passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the age of 87 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber prior to the funeral mass on Friday, February 10, 2012 between 9:30 A.M. and 10:15 A.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend Vincent TuanHa Celebrant. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Besides his loving wife of sixty five years, Katie (Kataryna), he is survived by his daughter Mary (Wayne) Gadd of Lethbridge and grandson Jeff Gadd of Edmonton. He is also survived by one brother and one sister as well as numerous nieces and nephews in the Ukraine.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Ivan was born in Korostyshev, Ukraine. He and his family came in 1950 as immigrants on a two year contract for sugar beets. They worked and lived in Turin, Barnwell and Taber. Ivan finally settled in Taber where he built his house in 1959. He worked for the Town of Taber doing cement work, pouring and finishing many of the sidewalks in the fifties and sixties. He later maintained the cemetery until his retirement. Ivan’s hobbies included his apple and plum trees as well as his garden.
