GEORGE POWELL
1915 - 1999
George Powell, beloved husband of Margaret Powell of Taber, passed away on Monday, October 18, 1999 at the age of 84 years.
George was born in Taber on April 21, 1915 the son of John and Jane Powell. He received his schooling in Taber and later married Margaret Mereski on October 12, 1940. They farmed in the Taber area and continued to farm following their move into the Town of Taber in 1949. George enjoyed his favorite hobbies of fishing and hunting. He would spend several months of the year salmon fishing at Vancouver Island. George served on the Barnwell School Board in the 1940’s. He was also the President and Secretary of the Taber Gun Club, President and founding member of the Taber Fish and Game Club, a member of the Lion’s Club, Elk Club, Moose Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. George’s sense of humor, soft heart, caring nature and love for his family will be lovingly remembered by those he cared for most, his family.
Besides his loving wife Margaret, he leaves to cherish his memory, a son Bob (Peg) Powell and their daughter Jacqueline and her daughter Jessica; a daughter Joan (Johnny) Anderson and daughter LeAnn Jensen; a son Donald (Viola) Powell and their son Mike; his brothers and sisters Ann Allen, Mike (Jeanette) Powell, Mary Peterson, Billy (Mary) Powell, Alex (Olga) Powell, Helen Cotton, Johnny Korsa and George (Carol) Korsa. George is also survived by Margaret’s sisters and brothers John (Margaret) Mereski, Anne (Alvin) Clayton, Alice Cowie, Stella Ingoldsby, Helen (Bob) Knowlden, Janet (Harold) Dench, Vincent (Audrey) Mereski and brother-in-law John Gettman.
George was predeceased by his parents John and Jane Powell, step-father Nick Korsa, grandson Blair Powell and a sister in infancy; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Allen, Wilfred Peterson, Fred Cotton, Jennie and Walter Ilnicki, Mary Gettman, Leo Peterson, Stanley Seleski, Jim Cowie and Roy Ingoldsby.
The Funeral Service was held at St. Theodore’s Anglican Church, 5120 - 44 Avenue, Taber on Friday, October 22, 1999 at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend Dale Lang officiating. Interment followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
