LAWRENCE SCHMIDT
1938 - 1999
Lawrence Schmidt of Grassy Lake, beloved husband of Reta Schmidt, passed away in the presence of his family at his home on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at the age of 61 years.
Lawrence was born in Medicine Hat on February 23, 1938 the son of Peter and Mary Schmidt. He attended school in Bow Island where he was also raised. On April 28, 1962 he married Reta Tverkutes. Lawrence worked for the St. Mary’s River Irrigation District for eleven years before achieving his dream of farming. His long time dream became reality in March of 1968 when Lawrence and Reta purchased land south of Grassy Lake. Lawrence was an active member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Grassy Lake and later attended St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Taber. Lawrence always remained active in community affairs and served as a delegate with the U.G.G.
Besides his loving wife Reta, Lawrence will be forever remembered by his children Greg of Calgary, Laureen (Greg) Passey of Coaldale and their daughter Kara, Rodney of Calgary and Jeffery of Grassy Lake. He is also survived by his sisters Cheryl (Ron) Lumley of Trochu and Diane (Benny) Schatz of Lethbridge; a sister-in-law Diana (Tom) Mason of Vancouver, British Columbia and a brother-in-law Bill (Karen) Tverkutes of Taber as well as nieces and nephews Nathan, Sherry, Trevor, Diella and Tamara.
Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Peter and Mary Schmidt.
Relatives and friends were invited for Prayers at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Sunday, October 17, 1999 at 6:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Monday, October 18, 1999 at 10:30 A.M. with Reverend Jim de los Angeles Celebrant. Interment followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
