Ida Jane Long, born to Sing Loy Wong and Gum Yin (Chan) Wong, passed away in Lethbridge on Saturday, March 6, 1999 at the age of 86 years.
She will be remembered by two sons, Douglas Leong; Edwin (Lily) Leong and their children Anthony, Julie and Jamie; daughter Gloria Adachi and her children Michael, Carol and Robert. Ida is also survived by her siblings Joe Wong of Victoria, British Columbia, Elsie Cha, Gitt Wong and Virginia Leong of Vancouver, British Columbia; nephews Harry (Hing) Leong and family, Ming (Sue) and family all of Calgary, as well as many other nieces, nephews and great and grand nieces and nephews.
Ida was predeceased by her husband John in 1997 and granddaughter Laura Lynn, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Ida married John Long on April 25, 1936 and arrived in Vauxhall about a month later. Mom was devastated by the wide open prairies, lack of water and trees and was known to describe her first impression of Vauxhall as “God started this place and forgot to finish it”. Mom was the backbone of the business which went through many phases before becoming Long’s Supermarket Ltd. She made many friends, met many acquaintances throughout her years at the store, and after retiring, missed the people and public very much.
Those wishing to pay their respects did so prior to the Funeral Service which was held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Austin Fennell officiating. Interment followed at the Vauxhall Cemetery.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Ida’s name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 317 - 10 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2M7 or to the Alberta Lung Association, 1273 - 3 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0K2 or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 1011 - 2 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 0C8.
