BERT WRIGHT

1908 - 2003

Bert Wright of Vauxhall, beloved husband of the late Lilly Wright, passed away peacefully at the Taber Hospital on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at the age of 94 years.
Bert was born in Scredington, Lings, England the second youngest of eight children born to John and Matilda Wright. At the age of seventeen he came to Canada to be a cowboy! The first job he landed was on the C.P.R. as a weed inspector in the Brooks area. He became certified as a steam engineer for the Railway but was never employed in that capacity. Instead, in the early 1930’s he began his long career in farming. Bert married Lilly Allcock on June 29, 1932 in Brooks. They lived in the Scandia district for about 4 years before moving to their present farm in Vauxhall in 1937. Since that time they have resided there and celebrated 69 years of marriage until Lilly passed away in July of 2001. Bert was known best for his political opinions, visiting over the fence to his neighbors and living a quiet simple life on the farm. In his life time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and having family home for a visit.
Bert is survived by three children, Muriel (Morgan) Sparks of Lethbridge, Tom (Sharon) Wright of Medicine Hat and Carol Skretting of Vauxhall; nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, Rae Ann (Dennis) O’Neil (Maryel & Liam), Kenneth (Carol) Sparks (Caitlyn), Brian (Diane) Sparks (Nickole, Jason & Ashley), Darrel (Renee) Sparks, Bonnie (Gil) Munroe (Jordan, Davey & Michael), Murray (Susan) Wright (Kristen & Michael), Shelley (Curt) Graham (Brendan, Alex and Lucas), Janet Baker (Delon, Tanya & Deena) and Marvin Skretting; four sisters-in-law, Mabel Peterson of Medicine Hat, Kay Barrett of Calgary, Irene Schultz of Calgary and Agnes Allcock of Brooks as well as numerous nieces and nephews in both Canada and England.
He was predeceased by his wife Lilly, his parents, three sisters, Daisey Porter, Ada Gray and Ida Wright; four brothers, Stanley, Bill, James and Albert all from England.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue Taber, on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
