THELMA WINCHESTER

1923 - 2003

Thelma Lafern Winchester, beloved wife of Norton Winchester of Taber, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2003 at the age of 79 years.
Thelma was born at Taber on October 29, 1923, the daughter of Joe and Mary Makinson. She received her schooling in Taber and later married Wilbert Smith. They had seven children and Wilbert passed away on April 20, 1963. She married Norton Winchester on September 17, 1966 and was always grateful to Norton for coming into her life and helping her raise her young family. With any leisure time she had, she enjoyed to quilt, bake, cook and bowl. She was very close to her mother and sisters, who were also there for her when she raised her family. Thelma spent many happy hours playing cards with them.
She will be forever remembered and loved by her children Robert (Sonia) Smith of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Leo (Marilyn) Smith of Lantzville, British Columbia, Linda (Tracey) Birch of Red Deer, Lorraine Clark of Taber, Kenneth Smith of High River and Sherry (David) Walker of Foremost; her mother Mary Makinson of Taber; daughter-in-law Judy Smith of High Prairie; sixteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and three sisters Helen Archer, Violet Charlton and Josie Dunz all of Taber and also by numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma was predeceased by her first husband Wilbert Smith, father Joseph Makinson, brother William “Billy” Makinson and son Wayne Smith.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Sunday, February 23, 2003 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and also at the Relief Society Room of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Taber Stake Centre, 4709 - 50 Avenue, Taber on Monday, February 24 from 12:45 P.M. to 1:45 P.M.
The Funeral Service followed at 2:00 P.M. with Bishop Kendon Bennett officiating. Interment followed in the Taber Memorial Garden.
