RAKEL SKRETTING

1899 - 1998

Rakel Skretting, wife of the late Gabriel Skretting passed away in Lethbridge on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at the age of 98 years.
Rakel Varhaug was born on July 20, 1899 in Varhaug, Norway. In 1919 she married Gabriel Skretting and in the spring of 1920 along with their baby son Ttrygve, they came to Canada. A daughter Greta and another daughter Ruby joined the family. The depression was on but they survived. In 1936 they moved to Enchant and lived in various places. In 1975 Rakel and Gabriel moved to Vauxhall and it was while there that Gabriel passed away. In 1979 she moved to Clearview Lodge in Taber before moving to Extendicare in Lethbridge in 1982 where she had remained up until the time of her passing. Both Rakel and Gabriel were members of the Enchant Evangelical Church and also staunch supporters of the Southern Alberta Bible Camp.
Rakel is survived by her daughters Greta (Palmer) Olson of Camrose and Ruby (John) Klim of Vauxhall and a daughter-in-law Mildred Skretting of Camrose. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. The grandchildren are George (Trish) Skretting of Lethbridge and family, Marilyn (John) Anderson of Abbotsford, British Columbia and their girls, Norman (M.J.) Skretting of New Norway and family, Donald (Kathy) Skretting of Ohaton and family, Peter (Karen) Skretting of Sherwood Park and family, Odell (Karen) Olson of Camrose and family, Beverly (Malcolm) Dixon of Lloydminister and family, Grace (Ken) Hagen of Lake Alma, Saskatchewan and family, Gloria Olson of Vancouver, Joy (Ed) Canavor of Toronto and family, Carol (Gerry) LaRose of Pincher Creek and family, Larry (Kathie) Klim of Vauxhall and family, Cathy (Chuck) Skretting of Enchant and family, and Wendy (Larry) Orsten of Coaldale and their daughter. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Agnes Varhaug of Lethbridge and her children Thelma, Henry, Trygve and Joan.
Rakel was predeceased by her husband Gabriel on March 31, 1977; her son Trygve on July 4, 1996; a grandson Marvin Skretting in March, 1951; a granddaughter Becky Olson in November, 1988; a brother Sven Varhaug in January, 1971 as well as two brothers and three sisters in Norway.
The Funeral Service was held at the Evangelical Free Church in Enchant on Monday, February 16, 1998 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Jeffery Frostad officiating. Interment followed at the Enchant Cemetery.
