IVAN SOLIC
1926 - 2009
Ivan Solic beloved husband of the late Mary Solic, passed away in Taber on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the age of 83 years.
He is survived by his children Steve Solic of Taber; Rose Mary Marsh of Taber; Linda (Kelly) Hirney of Taber and their sons Brady & Brendon; stepson Billy (Penny) Sekura of Claresholm and his son Matthew. He is also survived by Kelly’s mother Phyllis Hirney.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary on May 26, 2009, parents Stefan & Celar Solic and Kelly’s father Ken Hirney.
Ivan was born March 2, 1926 in Podgradina, Yugoslavia. He was very proud of his Croatian heritage. Ivan immigrated to Canada as a refugee, landing in Halifax on September 11, 1951. He married Mary Sekura on December 10, 1955 and they started their family. Ivan worked as a farm laborer, for the CPR, sugar factory, in coal mines and at the cannery. His final working years were spent with the Town of Taber. One of his proudest achievements was working on the water line replacement in the downtown in the late 1970’s. He retired from the Town of Taber in 1991. He was very proud of the work he did for the Town of Taber and he often enjoyed beers after work at the local establishments. Ivan was proud to be a member of the Legion and did volunteer work there and was a great supporter of the lounge. He also loved his politics, especially the PC’s - Ralph Klein, Peter Lougheed and Bob Bogle. He also took an avid interest in the life and death of JFK. With failing health in 2007, he moved into Taber’s Long Term Care facility, where Mary was already a resident. After Mary’s passing, he was never the same again. He passed away peacefully with family at his side on Canada Day.
Relatives and friends are invited to prayers at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 7:00 P.M.
A private family Burial Service will be held at the Taber Memorial Garden on Monday, July 6, 2009.
