THELMA STEVENS
1908 - 2009
Thelma Kate Stevens (nee Smith), beloved wife of the late Ray Stevens, passed away in Taber on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the age of 100 years.
Thelma is survived by her son William (Kathryn) Stevens of Barnwell, her daughter Kay (F. David) Reed of Ogden, Utah and by nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Mahlon (Betty) Smith of Calgary and Grant (Marie) Smith of Roswell, New Mexico; two sisters, Helen Gray of Buena Park, California and Vonda (Wallace) Rosander of Salt Lake City, Utah as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
Thelma was predeceased by her parents, her husband and one grandchild. She was also predeceased by three brothers, Brandon, Walt, Harland and by a sister, Anne.
Thelma was born November 16, 1908 in Raymond. She was the oldest on nine children born to Clarence Bolen Smith and Kate Gertrude Lee Smith.
Thelma’s early years were spent on the ranch on the Milk River Ridge south of Raymond. She received her education in the public schools in Raymond. When she was sixteen years old she enrolled at the Agricultural College in Raymond, taking courses in cooking and sewing. She took piano lessons and this education served her well. Thelma played the organ and piano for church services and accompanied many musical groups and soloists for many years.
On December 10, 1930 she married Owen Ray Stevens of Barnwell in the LDS Temple at Cardston. She has lived in Barnwell since that time. They were the parents of two children, William Ray Stevens and Kay Stevens.
Thelma was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many positions throughout her life.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, July 9, 2009 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. and also at the church prior to the funeral service on Friday, July 10, 2009 between 9:40 A.M. to 10:40 A.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Barnwell on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. with Bishop Eric Jensen conducting. Burial to follow at the Barnwell Cemetery.
