He is also survived by his sister Marion Purschke of Terrace, British Columbia; niece Linda (John) Furney of Victoria, British Columbia and their daughter Jess; nephews Brian and Tim Scanlon of Whittier, California.
He was predeceased by his parents Bill & Jessie Poynton; brother Jack Poynton; sister Shirley Scanlon; brothers-in-law Al Purschke and Bob Scanlon.
Bob was born August 27, 1928 in Medicine Hat. He was raised on the family farm north of Vauxhall and attended Kinlock School and Vauxhall High School. He graduated from Olds School of Agriculture in 1949, eager to do what he loved, farm! Bob married Carol Conley of Scandia in 1954. They started farming with a quarter of native prairie grassland and hauled two old country schools onto the land. One was their family home for a few years and the other, Kinlock School, was his garage. Bob and Carol planted a shelterbelt to protect their growing family from the west wind. They raised five children on this windswept prairie and eventually were glad to welcome their seven grandchildren into their home. Bob raised beef cattle and grew mixed grain and alfalfa crops. From flood irrigating to wheel moves to pivots, from teams of horses to tractors, Bob witnessed many changes in the farming industry. Bob’s community involvement over the years has included working with the Lease Association, Soft Wheat Growers, Masonic Lodge, Kinsmen, Lions Club, Vauxhall Agricultural Society and the Vauxhall Seniors. Bob and his father Bill helped build St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Vauxhall and Bob was a member of St. Theodore’s Anglican Church in Taber. He and his wife Carol have been members of the board of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, Lethbridge Chapter for many years. Bob always had a love of mechanical work and overhauled a lot of engines and machinery in his old “Kinlock” garage. Bob collected antique vehicles and machinery and on many a parade day he drove his Model T car. He played the piano and enjoyed sing songs with family and friends. In their later years Bob played every day and Carol sang along. Bob loved to tell a good story and always had a funny joke to share. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family and will be lovingly missed.
