Bill Crosthwaite

1932 - 2024

Joseph Charles Crosthwaite of Bow Island, beloved husband of the late Shirley Crosthwaite, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones Saturday, September 21, 2024 a few weeks short of his 92nd birthday.

A private graveside service was held at the Taber Memorial Garden on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 1:00 P.M., where Bill will be laid to rest with Shirley.

Bill is survived by his daughter Debbie (Bert) Michaelis of Lethbridge and their children Curtis (Jennifer) Michaelis (Zachary and Taylor), Cody (Amanda) Michaelis (Dawson and Brady); daughter Marilyn (Dave) Van Gaalen of Lethbridge and their children Angela (Greg) Leighton (Liam, Olivia and Abigail), Christopher Van Gaalen (Krystal Peters), Ryan (Courtney Pommen) Van Gaalen (Reed and Lainey). He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Joyce (Bernie) Hanson; brother-in-law Jack Peard and their families, and by his dear friend and companion June Knouse and her family.

He was predeceased by his wife of fifty six years, Shirley (née Larsen); parents Joseph and Ann and sister Thurza Peard.

Bill played a large role in southern Alberta agriculture. Starting as a ditch rider for St. Mary River Irrigation District, he was then promoted to superintendent for the Eastern District of SMRID. Many farmers will remember his blue company car driving the ditch banks and gravel roads. When he visited the coffee shop at 8AM, he had already checked the gates and reservoirs and water flows of the district. After his retirement from the SMRID, Bill worked for Burbridge Farm for fifteen years. For many years he volunteered with the Bow Island Fire Department and Ambulance Service. Bill loved to travel with family and friends, Vegas was his favourite. Everyone who knew Bill will miss his quick wit, endless one liners and gentle ribbing.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Bill Crosthwaite’s name can be made directly to Bow Island and District Health Foundation, Bag 3990, Bow Island AB, T0K 0G0.
