He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family members, building and repairing farm equipment and working with young men in the Scouting program. Burnell also enjoyed working with family history records and going on vacations with family members and close friends. He enjoyed playing on, and coaching, various sport teams including fastball, basketball, volleyball and badminton.

Burnell was a faithful, active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of which he had a firm testimony and found enjoyment reading the scriptures.

The family would like to extend sincere heartfelt thanks to the nurses and doctors at the Raymond Hospital who provided excellent care to make him as comfortable as possible during his stay there.
