CHARLIE KANOMATA

1937 - 2008

Charlie Kanomata, beloved husband of Mae (Sumi) Kanomata, passed away unexpectedly at the Taber Hospital on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the age of 71 years.
Besides his loving wife of 47 years, he is survived by his children Donna Kanomata of Calgary; Tracy (Randy) Spenrath and Rylan of Taber; Rob (Lana) Kanomata and Mandy, Jess and Jaden of Taber; Cindy (Jacques) Paige of Los Angeles, California.  He is also survived by his brothers Gary (Jane) Kanomata and Joe (June) Kanomata; sisters Rosemary (Kay) Kitagawa, Molly Matsumoto and Wendy Ridsdale and by special friends Mary Lou Everett and Peter Gallagher.
Charlie was born on July 16, 1937 in Mission City, British Columbia.  His family was evacuated to the Taber area in 1942 where they later purchased a family farm.  Charlie farmed east of Taber until 1987.  After farming, Charlie worked for the MD of Taber and then moved on to work for the Taber Irrigation District until his passing. Wherever he was, he always embraced people with quiet, unassuming warmth.  His gentle nature was accompanied by a great sense of humor and infinite patience. Charlie could always be found in the stands, proudly watching his grandchildren play sports, offering his dedication and support. He did everything he could to welcome and befriend anyone, regardless of politics, race or beliefs.  His wide circle of friends is a testament to his character and integrity. Charlie will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Family was Charlie’s greatest love; he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. One of Charlie’s many passions was curling; he was a vital member of the Taber Curling Club where he spent a great deal of his time organizing events, playing and socializing.  Charlie also enjoyed golfing, fishing, weightlifting and was dedicated to healthy living.  Always eager to learn new things, he recently began practicing aikido, learning guitar, and joined the Taber Gun Club.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service will be held at Martin Bros. Riverview Chapel, 610 - 4 Street South, Lethbridge on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 3:00 P.M.
