Darrell Schmidt

1982 - 2023

Darrell Norman Schmidt, passed away in Taber on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at the age of 40 years.

A private Burial Service was held at the Barnwell Cemetery on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.

Darrell will be missed by his family Jay and Colleen Johnson of Barnwell and their family Teneal (Brandon) Harker, Alysha Harker, Tyson Harker and Austin Johnson. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Darrell was born in Grande Prairie on September 15, 1982 to Edith Landry and William Schmidt. He was stricken with Spinal meningitis at the age of eighteen months which resulted in Cerebral palsy and mental handicap. In 1990, Jay and Colleen Johnson became Legal Guardians to Darrell.

Darrell attended school in Champion, Hill Spring and WR Myers in Taber. In 2001, he became involved with the Taber Special Needs Association where he thrived and was a part of the Taber community. Darrell lived in Taber with his roommates until his passing.

Darrell loved being outside. He enjoyed long walks in his wheel chair. He loved swimming, music and playing his electric organ. Darrell had an infectious smile. His mission in life was to bring joy to others.

Darrell was blessed with many caregivers over his more than twenty years of care. Every single person made a difference in his life. Taber Special Needs was Darrell’s family. Jay and Colleen are so appreciative of all that was done for Darrell.
