Constantine Correia

1931 - 2022

 Constantine Valentine Correia, beloved husband of the late Antonieta “Nita” Correia, passed away peacefully with family at his side in Taber on Monday, January 17, 2022 at the age of 90 years.

 A Prayer Service was held at Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 7:00 P.M. 

 The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Taber on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden. 

 Constantine is survived by his daughters Joy Correia (Kerry Webb) of Edmonton and Louise Correia (Richard Sobsey) of Edmonton; grandchildren Constance Sobsey (Tom Peters), Philip Correia-Webb and David Sobsey; great granddaughter Amalia Sobsey-Peters as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.

 He was predeceased by his wife Antonieta Correia (née Ferros); infant daughter Constance; grandson Benjamin Correia-Webb; parents Benjamin and Louisa (née Saldanha); sisters Ruby (Francis) D’Souza, Placida (Santan) Fernandes and Carmen Correia.

 Constantine, also known as Con or Custa, was born in Mombasa, Kenya on March 24, 1931, where he completed his Primary and Secondary education. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Karnatak University, Belgaum, India, majoring in Chemistry and Physics. In 1958, Con was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship which took him to the United States where he completed a Masters of Education at the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana Campus. He returned to Mombasa to get married and to continue his teaching career at the Goan High School there.

 Con married Antonieta Ferros on December 26, 1959.

 In 1965, Con made the move to Canada where he taught at Marymount School in Montreal and his wife and two daughters joined him in the summer of 1966. They moved to southern Alberta where he taught Physics and Chemistry at St. Mary’s Residential School, Cardston until 1969. In the summer of 1969, the family moved to Taber, where Con taught Science and Biology at St. Mary’s School until his retirement in 1987. 

Besides a lifetime commitment to science education and scholarship, Con participated in the community in a variety of ways over the years of his life in Taber. A faithful parishioner at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, he was also a Grand Knight of the Taber Knights of Columbus, a District Commissioner for the Flatlands Scout District in southern Alberta, the President of the Taber Stamp Club, a volunteer with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul and the Membership Secretary of the Barnwell Seniors Club. 

Con enjoyed his family and friends, fishing, photography, stamp collecting, completing newspaper crosswords and faithfully watching Jeopardy. He was also known for his creative and artistic endeavours, including his calligraphic hand-writing, and for his uniquely sarcastic sense of humour.
