Catherine Koyanagi

1928 - 2021

It is with great sadness, we share the peaceful passing of Catherine Meiko Koyanagi, beloved wife of the late Tad Koyanagi, in Lethbridge on Monday, May 10, 2021 at the age of 92 years.

A private funeral service was held at Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber on Monday, May 17, 2021. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.

Catherine is survived by her siblings Pat (Art) Hironaka, John (Barb) Konno, Vi (Jack) Ikeda, Evie (Jack) Gibbons all of Calgary and Andy (Joan) Konno of Surrey, British Columbia; sister-in-law, Kiyo Koyanagi of Lethbridge, brother-in-law Chick (Kay) Koyanagi of Calgary and by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Tad Koyanagi; parents Hideo and Michiko Konno; sisters and their spouses Grace (Bunk) Odagaki, June (Bill) Taniguchi and Ruth (Gordie) Laurie; brother Walter Koyanagi; sisters-in-law and their spouses Misao (Kogi) Kadonaga and Suzumi (Go) Uyeda; nieces Sunao Shimbashi and her husband Henry, Christine Taniguchi and nephew Craig Odagaki.

Catherine was born December 29, 1928 in New Westminster, British Columbia. She spent many years living in Taber, working for the post office for thirty years. She then retired and moved to Lethbridge, living in a gorgeous ‘granny suite’ next to Brad, Janne, Tessa and Terik. From there she moved to The Gardens and enjoyed living independently in that senior’s complex. “Auntie” as she was known to so many people, truly enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Her home was always open to anyone visiting, making sure she had a delicious meal prepared for them, good lively discussions and laughter. She planned parties and loved entertaining. Auntie was very progressive in her thinking and had a positive attitude about life. She always said, “I have had a good life, I am so lucky for family and good friends, and when it’s my time, it’s my time”. She carried herself with grace and dignity, having strong family values which she was such a role model for all of us. Catherine was so generous and caring and made afghans with love for all of us.

Auntie enjoyed travelling to many places but loved to go to Las Vegas in her later years. She always felt fortunate family would take her on vacations which she enjoyed immensely.

"Your mind never let you down, but your failing health got the best of you. Rest in peace and know how much we will miss you."
