Darryl Smith
1941 - 2019
Earl Darryl Smith, beloved husband of Bernice Smith, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the age of 78 years.
The funeral service was held at the Christian Community Church, 415 - 4 Avenue, Burdett on Friday, November 29, 2019 at 2:00 P.M.
Darryl is survived by his wife Bernice and his children Kurt (Sonya) Smith of Burdett and their family Kaylee (Tim) Ray of Gilbert, Arizona, Braden (Courtney) Smith of Taber and their daughter Elliyah; Kari (Anthony) Young of Chandler, Arizona and their daughters Shelby and Sadie. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Margaret Smith, Audrey (Allen) Danby and by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Earl and Ethel Smith, brother Allan Smith, sister Leora Smith and Bernice’s parents, Ted and Olga Heckenlaible.
Darryl was born in Medicine Hat on September 24, 1941 and grew up on the family farm south of Burdett. After moving to Bow Island in 1957, he graduated from Senator Gershaw High School in 1959. During these years, he was involved in the 4H Grain Club, Social Credit Party of Alberta and the local Evangelical Free Church youth.
He then attended Hillcrest Christian College, Prairie Bible Institute and the University of Calgary where he earned his Masters Degree in Education. Darryl loved to teach and went on to obtain his Doctorate of Education from Seattle University. For fifty two years, he enjoyed teaching high school in the City of Calgary. Besides teaching, Darryl was involved with several different Christian ministries which enabled him to share his faith in Jesus. In his free time he enjoyed photography, genealogy and collecting books for his vast home library. In July of 2019, Darryl returned to Bow Island until the time of his passing.
