Nita Correia
1930 - 2018
Antonieta Satira G. Correia (nee Ferros), beloved wife of Custa Correia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and friends in Taber on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at the age of 88 years.
Relatives and friends were invited to Prayers at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 7:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Besides her loving husband Custa, she is survived by their two daughters, Joy and her husband Kerry Webb of Edmonton and Louise and her husband Richard Sobsey of Edmonton; grandchildren Connie and David Sobsey and Phil Correia-Webb. She is also survived by her siblings Sister M. Eulalia of the Apostolic Carmelites, Patna, India, Aurelia (Mark) Mendes of London, England, Angelica (Mike) Fernandes of Perth, W. Australia, Peter (Clara) Ferros of Taber and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter Constance May Correia; grandson Benjamin Correia-Webb; parents Mary (nee DeSouza) and Felipe Ferros; brother Stephen Ferros.
Nita was born in Zanzibar, E. Africa on January 12, 1930. She completed her primary and secondary education at Convent School, in Belgaum, India. She received a B.A. from Karnatak University of India, a B.Ed. from the Karnatak University of India and a B.Ed. from the University of Lethbridge.
Nita married Constantine Correia on December 26, 1959 in Mombasa, Kenya.
Nita taught primary classes at Arab Girls School, Mombasa, Kenya (1954 – 1965), St. Mary’s Residential School, Cardston (1966 – 1969), St. Patrick’s School, Taber (1969 – 1970) and at the Blood and Peigan reserves in the federal schools (1971 – 1995) at Leverne, Standoff and Brockett.
Nita was a pillar of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. She founded Sunday school, helped revive the Catholic Women’s League when it was defunct, made rosaries for the mission and established a scholarship for the best religion student at St. Mary’s School.
Nita enjoyed her family, cooking East Indian cuisine, flower gardening, travelling and a variety of needle crafts.
