Aiko "Betty" Tomiyama

1930 - 2018

Aiko “Betty” Tomiyama, passed away peacefully at the St. Teresa Place Care Centre in Calgary on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the age of 87 years. 

 Relatives and friends were invited to Prayers at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at 7:00 P.M.

 The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden. 

 She will be dearly missed by her four children Blake (Carole) Tomiyama of Calgary, Larry (Lucy) Tomiyama of Calgary, Chris (Heather) Tomiyama of Calgary and Ina Tomiyama of Calgary; grandchildren Stephanie, Melissa, Jessi (David), Jordan and Jarod. Aiko will also be fondly missed by her brother Bob Murakami; sisters Takaye (Aki) Tomiyama, Naomi (Mutsuo) Kuramoto; sisters-in-law Hobe Fujimagari, Sue Saruwatari, Shiz Tomiyama and Chizuko Murakami. 

 She was predeceased by Yuki Tomiyama, her husband of fifty six years; brothers Shinichi Murakami, Yoshimoto Murakami, Masamichi Murakami; sister Helen Fujimoto; brothers-in-law Jack Fujimagari, Mick Saruwatari, Yosh Tomiyama, Mike Ohashi and Tats Fujimoto; sisters-in-law Nancy Murakami and Hisaye Ohashi.

 Aiko was born on August 24, 1930 in Steveston, British Columbia, the third of eight children. Her family was evacuated to Greenwood, British Columbia in 1942. The family returned to Japan in 1946, but Aiko returned to Calgary in 1950. She married Yuki Tomiyama in 1956 and together they raised their family in Taber. She moved to Calgary in 2013 to be closer to her family. 

Aiko was a proud member of the St. Augustine’s CWL, the Momiji Dance group, and volunteered at the Taber Extended Care. She took great pride in her family and one of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren.
