Nick was born July 19, 1926 in Opende, Gronigen, The Netherlands. He served in the Army in Indonesia and came to Canada in the early 1950’s. Nick returned to Holland to marry Janny Van Halen on February 26, 1954 and they both immigrated to Canada later that year. After living and working in a sawmill in Burmis, they moved to Vauxhall where he was employed with the PFRA for a number of years. He then pursued farming which he did for many years.
Nick was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church, Vauxhall Senior Citizens, Vauxhall Food Bank and the Vauxhall Cemetery Society. He served on the REA Board for many years and received a plaque in recognition of his contribution. He also received a plaque from the Sugar Beet Growers for twenty five years. He loved making his rounds at the Taber Hospital visiting the sick and visiting with the residents at Clearview Lodge. Nick adored his grandkids and great grandkids. We were blessed to be able to celebrate his ninetieth birthday in July of this year. He will be lovingly remembered.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Nick’s name may be made directly to a charity of one’s choice.
