1920 - 2015

Peacefully and surrounded by her children, Kiyoko “Katy” Kano passed away on Friday, June 5, 2015 at the Taber Hospital at the age of 94 years.

Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the church in the Relief Society Room prior to the funeral service on Saturday, June 13, 2015 between 10:00 A.M. and 10:40 A.M.

The Funeral Service was held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Barnwell Chapel, Barnwell on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. Burial followed at the Barnwell Cemetery.

Katy leaves to mourn her seven children and their spouses Mark Kano of Edmonton, Ruth (Jim) Kyle of Okotoks, Mitch (Sandra) Kano, Fern Kano, Malcom (Maureen) Kano all of Barnwell, Lauren (Andrew) McGregor of Langley, British Columbia and Marshall (Peggy) Kano of Highland, Utah. She leaves behind her many grandchildren and great grandchildren who love and admire their Grandma Kano, also known as “Great”.

Katy grew up in Fraser Mills, British Columbia, the oldest of eleven children born to Tsuruyo and Kiichi Maruyama. She kept busy helping raise her siblings and eventually having seven kids of her own with her loving husband, Tak Kano. Tak and Katy resided in Barnwell all their married life. Katy and Tak built The Brite Spot Confectionery, a popular and favorite meeting place for many. Katy could be found at the front counter serving ice cream, visiting with friends and in the kitchen making famous “Tak Burgers”. Building The Brite Spot business and growing their family kept Katy healthy, happy and young at heart. Katy was known for her kind and generous spirit. She enjoyed being surrounded by her family and friends and was the glue that bound together the Kano and Maruyama families. Katy nurtured lifelong relationships and cast a light of genuine love, warmth and consideration for those in her life’s circle. Having touched the lives of so many in her 94 years, Katy will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her. While she may be gone, she is forever loved and never forgotten.
