Norma Letitia Theresa Porter, beloved wife of the late Don Porter, passed away in Taber on Friday, August 29, 2014 at the age of 102 years.
Relatives and friends were invited to Prayers at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 5:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber, on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Vincent TuanHa Celebrant. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Norma is survived by her daughter Elaine Tisdale of Port Dover, Ontario; four grandchildren Craig and Carla Randell, Donene Maple and Eylssa (Philip) Lampman; nephews Michael (Petra) McAvoy and James (Connie) McAvoy and their families as well as her dear friend Peg Powell.
She was predeceased by her husband Don, daughter Kathleen Griffith, parents John and Ollie McAvoy, brothers John McAvoy and Marcus McAvoy, sister-in-law Margaret McAvoy.
Norma was born at Morse, Saskatchewan on March 22, 1912 to John and Ollie McAvoy. She received her schooling at Morse and at the Academy of Sion in Moose Jaw. Norma served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from April 1942 to December 1945 and served in England. She married Don Porter on February 21, 1946. They resided in Calgary, later moving to Lethbridge. In 1958 they moved to Taber where Don established an accounting practice. In 1968 Norma began teaching at St. Mary’s School, where she taught for nine years until her retirement in 1977. Over the years she was active in the Catholic Womens League, Taber Legion and the Lioness. Norma enjoyed painting and playing bridge, playing well in to her nineties. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed.
