BETTY SCHMIDT
1935 - 2014
Betty Faye Schmidt, passed away peacefully with her family at her side in Taber on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the age of 78 years.
Relatives and friends were invited to meet with the family at Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, May 1, 2014 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Service was held at the Evangelical Free Church, 5431 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Besides her partner Lyle Lawson, Betty is survived by her children Jo-anne (Conrad) Walburger of Lethbridge, Geri (Sheldon) Virostek of Enchant, Jackie (Fred) Giles of Spruce Grove, Jody Nakamura (Scott Sterr) of Lethbridge and Kevin (Bona) Schmidt of Hays; seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by Lyle’s children Val (Garry) Repas of Bow Island, Sheri Hoy of Sylvan Lake and Wes (Deb) Lawson of Taber and their families; sisters Daisy Collett and Kathy (David) Evans; brother Verle (Mary Anne) Shockey; sisters-in-law Sharon Shockey, Marg Shockey and Rae Shockey; brother-in-law Garland Hoel as well as numerous nieces and nephews and mom’s very special friend Margaret Koncz.
She was predeceased by her parents Ed and Ella Shockey; brothers Lum, Roy and Orval Shockey, sisters Mavis Hoel, sister-in-law Barbara Shockey, brother-in-law Harold Collett, her childrens father Bill Schmidt, niece Michelle Shockey and nephew Todd Evans.
Betty was born November 20, 1935 in Paddockwood, Saskatchewan. She went to school at Reliance School, Taber Central and WR Myers High School. After high school she worked for J.K. How and Company. In 1954 Betty married Bill Schmidt and four years later moved to the Purple Springs grazing reserve, where they raised their family. Betty was an active member of the curling and roping clubs, as well as a book keeper, unit clerk and receptionist over the years. She was a gifted seamstress, loved her crafts and flowers, singing, playing golf and cards with numerous friends. Her most enjoyable moments were spent with her children and grandchildren.
Betty lived with Lyle in Taber until 2008 when she moved to extended care facilities. She resided at Linden View Care Centre until the time of her passing.
