FLORETTE LONGACRE
1926 - 2000
Florette Longacre, beloved wife of Jim Longacre, passed away in Edmonton on Tuesday, September 12, 2000 at the age of 74 years.
Born in 1926 on the family homestead near Retlaw, Florette grew up in Alberta’s south country and went to Crescent School. She married Jim Longacre at Taber in 1948 and raised three children together on the Longacre farm. Florette loved music and took great pleasure in playing for dances in the Longacre orchestra, otherwise known as the Melody Four. Anyone from such places as Enchant, Sundial, Vauxhall, Retlaw and Hays just to name a few, enjoyed some of the best music around while listening to Florette play the piano in her unmistakable honky-tonk style. The family moved to Lethbridge in 1968, where music and entertaining friends remained a big part of their lives. After suffering a massive stroke in 1993, Florette was moved to St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital in Edmonton and remained there until the time of her passing.
Florette was predeceased by her infant daughter Karen.
She is survived by her husband Jim; brothers Wilfred and Allard and children Wade (Liz), Keith (Rita) and Faye. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The Funeral Service was held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Monday, September 18, 2000 at 10:30 A.M. with Deacon Mike Whalen officiating. Burial followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
