1926 - 2011

With deepest sadness, the family of Maria Werewka, announce her passing on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the age of 85 years.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 5009 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Vincent TuanHa Celebrant. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden.
Mary is survived by two sons Walter (Elaine) Sylewko of Medicine Hat and their daughter Rhonda (Gord) Nixon; Fred (Sandra) Werewka of Taber and their children Devin (Judie), Jason (Andrea), Nolan (Kristin) and Andrea (Derek) Davies; daughter Jeannie Holstine of Lethbridge and her children Melissa (Dean) Demarco, Brendan (Jessica) and Garrett as well as fourteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Nina Skretting of Taber and Val (Lloyd) Robinson of Medicine Hat; brothers John (Nina) Zadan of Burlington, Ontario and Nick Zadan of Lethbridge.
She was predeceased by her husband Fred; parents Ivan and Anna Zadan; grandson Jordan Holstine; great granddaughter Jenna Werewka; brothers-in-law John Badura and Reider Skretting.
Mary or “Baba” as she was affectionately known, was born in Kovalivka, Ukraine on August 20, 1926. She married Fred Werewka on May 22, 1948 in Austria. They immigrated to Canada in 1949, first working in Turin before moving to Taber where she has lived for the past sixty one years. Baba enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She was a wonderful homemaker, always cooking and cleaning and never still. No one ever left her home with an empty stomach. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and they in return loved her dearly. Mary spent the last seven years in the Clearview Lodge where she made many friends and enjoyed all the activities provided there.
