ALLAN CLEROUX
1934 - 2000
Allan Merrill Cleroux, beloved husband of Ruby Cleroux, passed away at his home near Vauxhall, on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at the age of 65 years.
Allan, son of Oscar and Sarah (nee Rathwell) Cleroux, was born in Carleton Place, Ontario on June 26, 1934. Allan married Ruby Runtz on October 1, 1955 in Arnprior, Ontario. He joined the Bank of Nova Scotia after completing his schooling. The family resided in different Ontario localities before being transferred to Vauxhall in February 1977. Adjusting to the banana-belt climate, chinook winds, prairie nuances (space, dust, sunsets and unpaved streets, etc.) and friendly “cowboys” were some of the fasinating aspects of the move from east to west.
Concluding a lifetime career with the bank and twelve years as manager of the Vauxhall Branch, Allan retired in 1989, after thirty six years of service. He served in various capacities in the community, on Town Council, Vauxhall Businessmen’s Association andwith Vauxhall Performing Arts. He coached hockey and softball as well as participating in other sports. During retirement he also served a lengthy term as Interim Executive Director at Alberta’s (Mennonite Brethren) Camp Evergreen, near Sundre. Allan enjoyed travelling and camping. For two winters he and Ruby served with Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service in California and Texas. He also enjoyed gardening (including corn acreage), hunting and had restored several antique vehicles as a hobby. He was a member of Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church and served in various capacities.
He is survived by his wife Ruby and children Donna Chaloux (Marcel) and their children Amanda, Genieve, Matthew, and Kaitlyn of Gravenhurst, Ontario; Greg of Toronto, Ontario; Paula Epp (Richard) and children Tyson, Taylor and Meredith of Vauxhall; and Sarah Dufton (Rob) of Kitchener, Ontario. He is also survived by his brothers Gerald (Barbara) of Perth, Ontario; and Charles (Beryl) of Lombardy, Ontario; sister-in-law Irene of Carleton Place, Ontario as well as nieces and nephews.
Allan was predeceased by his parents Oscar and Sarah and brothers Stanley and Leonard.
Realtives and friends were invited to meet with the family at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Thursday, January 13, 2000 from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
The Funeral service was held at the Vauxhall Mennonite Brethren Church, 320 - 9 Street North, Vauxhall on Friday, January 14, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Bill Glasspell officiating. Interment followed at the Vauxhall Mennonite Cemetery.
