GEORGE SMEDLEY
1913 - 1999
George Whitfield Smedley of Taber, beloved son of the late William and Clara Smedley, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 30, 1999 at the age of 85 years.
George was born on December 3, 1913 in Montreal. When Britain declared war, George enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Enlisting on September 5, 1939 he remained in the Service before being discharged to “civil Life” on October 31, 1945. Serving his country as a Gunner, George served in Sicily, Italy, the United Kingdom and the Central Mediterranean Area and received the Italy Star Defense Medal. George worked for many years in Saskatchewan working for Alex Becker and Wayne Newkirk. He crossed Canada many times by hitch hiking and riding railcars. Through his sense of humor and tales, George made many friends along the way.
George is survived by a brother David (Joan) Smedley of Fergus, Ontario and a sister Mary Smedley of Guelph, Ontario.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Herbert and a sister Florence.
The Funeral Service was held at the Southland Funeral Chapel, 5006 - 48 Avenue, Taber on Monday, October 4, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Ken Crassweller officiating. Interment followed at the Taber Memorial Garden.
