HUGO KERBER

1907 - 2002

Hugo Wilhelm Kerber, beloved husband of the late Hildegard Kerber, passed away at Taber Extended Care on Thursday, November 14, 2002 at the age of 95 years.
Hugo was born on January 27, 1907 in Germany. In July of 1935 he married Hildegard Foth. They settled on a farm in the fertile Vistula Valley of West Prussia. In the fall of 1943, following the harvest, Hugo was drafted to war service in southern France. A year later he was reported missing in action.
In the spring of 1948 the family was finally reunited in West Germany following Hugo’s release from Prisoners of War service in California and England. In 1957 the family emigrated to Canada, settling on a market-garden farm near Park Lake. There, Hugo was once again able to pursue his life calling as a farmer, selling vegetables at the farmer’s market in Lethbridge and at the farm gate. Helpful neighbors and a friendly community made it easy to adopt Canada as their new home.
Hugo was an excellent steward of the land and his livestock. His concern for the well-being of farmers continued into his retirement years. In 1981 the couple retired to Lethbridge.
In recent years Hugo and his faithful Welch Corgi “Rex”, were met by many friends and neighbors on their long walks in north Lethbridge.
In November 2001, Hugo was admitted to the Taber Extended Care, where he received excellent care from a committed staff and many dedicated volunteers.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Hildegard in June of 1987 and a sister Anny in Germany in 1993.
Hugo will be forever remembered by his son Dick (Yvonne) of Lethbridge and their children, Carol (Ken), Patricia (Brice) and Brenda; daughter Frieda (Karl) Regehr of Rosemary and their children, Gordon (Jeanette), Dirk (Debra) and Norman; daughter Linda Peterson of Surrey, British Columbia and her children, Dean, Kristie (John) and Leslie; besides the nine grandchildren, Hugo is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
The Funeral Service was held at Christ Trinity Lutheran Church, 416 - 12 Street South, Lethbridge on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Gary Nickel officiating. Interment followed in Mountain View Cemetery.
