Herbert lived a life of service. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving for many years as a Branch President in England and holding many Ward and Stake positions. His favorite was as Cub Scout leader and working with the Flatlands District Council. He received his education in Accrington and began working at the age of fourteen in the cotton mills. He attended night school and became a machinist. On January 1, 1936 he married Louise Shaw.
During the Second World War, he supported Louise while she served a Mission for the L.D.S. Church. Their second child Barbara was born in 1943. After the war, in 1947 they immigrated to Rosemary, to the Bertram Coombs family. After many odd jobs in Rosemary, Herbert became employed at the Sugar Factory where he worked until his retirement. During his retirement years he was involved at Parkside Manor Seniors, as board member and President where he was voted 1988 Senior Citizen of the Year. Herbert and Louise loved to travel, returning to England several times. After Louise’s death he made many trips to his nieces and nephews in the United States, where he was a great favorite. He was very close to his cousins Lester and Sallie Taylor of Boise, Idaho. He was a very caring husband and a devoted father.
