From Halifax the family travelled for four days by train to Barnwell, where they resided two miles west of town. Jelle went to school for a short time, then started working on a farm in Burdett. He later went to work for the PFRA in Vauxhall and while there he took correspondence courses in various studies. Soon he became an instrument man, surveying farm lands around Hays and later in Brooks. Jelle worked many years in that position until his retirement. While in Brooks he met the love of his life Maria Hrup and they were married in 1981.
